Is it advisable to cover up the vines like you do with the Giant Punkins? I am gonna try to grow watermelons once again this year. I have about given up trying to locate seeds for the miniature, about 3 to 5 lbs, 1.36 to 2.268 kilogram, watermelons. Looks like I will be planting seeds for the large mellons.

Greg, then you need... Nope, not jokin' Bro, bred these up about 5 years ago out of two small melons, Sugar baby and one called Quaxali(?) Phreakin' Memory or sumpin' like that It looks, just like the name, like a footbal, light green, dark green stripe, and deep red flesh, very sweet! if anybody can help me remember the name...please do. Greg, I remember the day my youngest daughter was born, it was 105 degrees, and had been for 6 days around 100 (missouri, not in Minnesota) I had to shelter the phruit of all my melons to keep them from scalding, the vines were fine tho, and this was on soil with a very high sand content .

So Phil do you have any extra seeds? I sure would like to try them. The reason I want small ones is so they will fit into the refrigerator. Ever since I first bought a Pureheart, by Dulcinea, I have wanted to grow them. The problem with the Pureheart is they are seedless, so there are no seeds to plant. Doug: Guess I will cover the vines. I am bound and determined to succeed at growing Giant Punkins and small watermellons. Next thing I am going to try is Giant Tomatoes. Since every one here claims 'Everything is Big in Texas", why not. Thanks to you both for responding.

You will get plenty of seed out of the 5P. melon and yes, I have some for you, they are very hardy, at least in the north

I never realy had to cover mine with tarp but did use a few blocks as the melon grew. I may not grow them this year because they havn't got the sweet taste like the small ones do
