I have a hen(RIR about a year old+ a couple months) that is bleeding from somewhere. I think it is from her vent since I found an "abcess" looking something on her vent. I sprayed her with this stuff called "Blue Lotion Spray" from the Farm supply store. It's ingredients are Crystal Violet, Tannic Acid, Benzyl Alcohol, Glycerin, and Isopropyl Alcohol. It is made by Achor. I hope I did the right thing. I don't want to lose a hen and the only thing I could find "wrong" with any of them was the "abcess" thingy. Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.....

They are free range, I have them on lay ration pellets, the water dish is plastic. One of the gallon ones with the screw on base. The "abcess" thingy was on her vent.

Well, it does'nt sound as though it came from her food or water. Could be she was stung by a bee.........does she still have it?

I didn't get to check her yesterday, but did notice one of them has diarrhea. I think it was her. Still no blood, so hopefully it was nothing. I did notice(and had to google to find out what it was) black scabs on several of their combs, a symptom of Fowl Pox. Any experience with that?? From what I can tell it is not gonna kill them, but wanted to know more about it. I'll try to check her today and let you know about the abcess thingy. Thanks so much Cavey!!! **Big **

I didn't notice it until most of them have the spoots already. I did give em some ivermectin(sp) ¼ cc per bird by mouth(that's what the Chicken Bible- Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens) said to give for that stuff(the ivermectin, that is). I hope it works..... Thanks for the help, Cavey- you got some Karma from me for it!!

First reply was....
Ivermectin is a wormer and doesn't do anything for fowl pox or abscesses. Tell her to get some flagyl (aka Metronidazole or Fishzole). It can be purchased online as a fish medication without Rx. 250mg in 1 gallon of water and give it to all the birds as the sole source of water for 3-4 days. __________________

She is better! Not sure what the deal was, but they all seem fine now. They may not stay that way if they keep eating my collards, tho....
