The 3 in on the left together are the SLW and the GWW. This is one we call big ears. This RIR is friendlier than the other one, she almost died when she was little so she got handled more. The is baby, she stays under my feet when I go in the pen, she knows I'll keep the others from picking on her.

Absolutely stunning! They are beautiful! You have a patchwork quilt of chickens, and they are just wonderful to look at. Don't you love it when they come up to you for treats? Mine will practically jump me for the treats! Thankyou for sharing them, they are just wonderful!

Thanks, we really enjoy them. Fresh eggs, yeap! Chicken and Dumplings, not for some time to come. Not real sure I could kill them to eat. Would have to get SIL to do that if I really had to. Hopefully I won't have to. trudy

xdx, I got four foot chain link and I added to the top by four more feet, and I have had a few get bright ideas. One stood on top of the chicken house, right in the middle of their area, and jumped for all she was worth and flew over that 8 foot high fencing. I sat and watched her do it. Soon as she was out, I grabbed her up, took her in, got out some scissors and trimmed some wings. She hasn't done it since... They seem to know after a trimming they ain't goin nowhere! Some trim one wing, I trim both, just looks better to me. You want to trim the primary feathers, the outermost, and trim from the top down, not too close, you don't want to get into any blood feathers. I got a chart somewhere of how to trim. Its for cockateils, but its the same basic idea. Keep them from having that lift. This summer when we get fencing for the whole property it will only be four foot to five foot, depending on what we use, but the perimeter of the property is so far away from the house, it won't matter, they will never go out that far, chickens tend to stay around the house, they won't venture out into the open to far out and we have a lot of open area. They will walk with me if I am out there, otherwise they stick close to the house. The fence is more to keep all the roaming dogs and whatever else may come this way...out. We do have coyotes out here, but seeing as we are so open, I haven't seen or heard a one, which is fine by me! I don't know it all, but I will talk your ear off about chickens and caring for them! I am going to be selling off Japanese Silver Phoenix this summer. Out of my incubator hatch in November I got 7 boys and 6 girls. I wanted the girls to put in with Willie, my spare Phoenix, but I am selling the boys. Well, I am rambling! Do you want eye candy or functional chickens, like layers? Some layers are nice to look at too.

Laura I think the ones your asking about are the Silverwing Wyondottes. The Wyondottes are winter layers, I have 4 right now.
xdx, I have mine high enough to walk in but I had to put a top on mine cause some kept flying out. I don't trim the wings now that the top is on the pen. It use to be an old dog pen that hadn't been used for a long time and almost got torn down. My first 8 were already half grown and wouldn't have much to do with me at first. After loosing a couple I decided to top it. Just secured some wire on it. So far no more have gotten out and nothing has gotten in. We have the coyotes, fox and no telling what else. I don't have all the answers either, but like Kelly I like talking about chickens. trudy

Yes they do seem to get hot in the summer, but so does all of them. I wound up putting a tarp over part of the pen so they can have some shade and I keep their water shaded also. Last year I planted an air potatoe vine to cover part of the other side of the pen, but it didn't get aggressive enough to do much good. Although the chickens loved the little potatoes that fell in the pen occasionally. I plan to move an akebia (chocolate) vine there to run up and over the pen. I have to move it anyway, its to aggressive for where I have it now. trudy

Trudy, I learned a trick from a frugle friend of mine. In the summer, I keep buckets of water, well, I keep dishpans of water. You can get dishpans for a dollar at the dollar store. Save some 2 liter bottles, fill them up with water and freeze them. Put the frozen 2 liter bottle in the dishpan of water and it will keep the water cool all day! Have enough in reserve to swithc them out. I just take the old melted one and wash it in the sink with dishwashing liquid to clean it good and stick it back in the freezer. Works great in keeping the water cool for them!

What a good idea, thanks Kelly I'll do that. I have plenty of 2 liter bottles around here. I keep water in them as reserve. Around here if the wind blows the wrong direction my power goes out. Which means so does the well. Kuntry Living !! trudy
