I recently took a class for the bank, on security. I am in the process of taking ALOT of my info out of my social network and forum profiles. (this is gonna take a while) There are programs out there that people can get to go into facebook, etc. and act as an administrator and see ALL of your private information. This makes Identity theft and fraud a walk in the park for them. Take out your birthday, exact address, last name and any other personal info you have in there. EVEN if you click on "don't show this info on the boards" etc, these thieves can see it very easily. If you choose to leave your info in the 'private' areas, then I suggest you get a screwdriver, and remove the front door from your house. Oh, and take your kids to a park and just leave them there with a bunch of strangers. THATS how unsafe it is!! And to the FOOLS who put all that info, kids name and ages, and phone numbers out where everyone can see it..... What the He!! is wrong with you?!?!?!?!?

Thank you so much for that post. I have made myself nutzzz trying to tell people the same thing about all the major social sites, along with their promotion of gangs, drugs, stalking, molestation and drug use.

I was told a couple of years ago that if I want a job with the federal government I better not have a social networking site. That is the reason why, among others, you will not see me on any of them. If someone needs to know about me they can just ask and I will determine if it is on a need to know basis or not.

The investigator that was teaching the security and fraud class, caught a fraudulent check casher by typing her name into facebook. There she was! So he "friended" her and *BAM* busted!

My biggest peeve with FB and MySpace is the innocent folks, good folks, that do not realize that they are supporting organizations that are undermining the values of our youth. I have opened accounts at both, just to see what's there. I guess one sees what they look to see. I get into trouble really often for my views about those types of sites.
I know a young man personally. He is a friend of my oldest son. This young man is addicted to MySpace. He cannot hold a job or function in society. He moves around sponging off friends and friends of his fathers. He is bright, intelligent and far better educated than I am, but I fear that the influences that he is under will so totally infect him that he will never be able to break away.
I do not condemn anyone for their participation of these sites. I do however reccommend that they research the background of these sights, their ties to organized crime, gang related activities, the open promotion of drug use, the harborage to stalkers, child molesters, kidnappers, pedophiles and documented cases of being directly responsible for the homocides of many young women.

Just like on ANY public site you have to use discretion .. you can't just go out there and put your whole life online ... There are people like that on any given site .. Problem with say My Space is they give people a "private" page .. Parents are Not Monitoring their children when online ... And a lot of parents don't see what these kids are doing while they are chatting .. and or Texting their friends .. and if said child happens to make a second account they can totally Fool their parents ... They are NOT bad sites .. Its What said person decides to put on these pages!

Hits (visits) equate to advertising $$$. Every time a person visits the site, the site gets paid. Every time you click on an add item on a page or open ANY product or service, the site gets paid. Membership is the same, big numbers, big dollars. In less than 24 hours of opening an account on MySpace, I had several 'friend' requests, one of course was Tom. The others were from (supposedly) young ladies. Pictures were of young ladies anyway so they MUST have been sweet, attractive, lonely, horny teenieboppers looking for 'friendship'. Never mind the 'so much more', I'm sure that was just if you sent $19.95 or $69.95 for the video.
No, no one HAS to click on any link... but they do. Enough do that some are scammed, some become addicted, and some are stalked and killed. Don't take my word for it. Watch the news, do a few google searches, educate yourself to what your children are exposed to, but don't just accept that denial will make the facts go away. Your 11 year old is pitted against a proffessional huckster. The odds are NOT in your childs favor.

Yes it does pay to be careful. After all would you walk into a public bar and pin a notice on the board listing all of your personal info? Of course not. If there is no reason for a website to know your real name why give it? Like Phil I do not use my real name on any social networking sites. I also have a spreadsheet saved on my PC with a list of alternative IDs and valid 'throwaway' email addresses which is another good way of retaining anonymity and avoiding spam.
