Well my check engine light was flashing on and off for a while so I bought a code scanner $169.00 and plugged in in the car computer and this is what I came up with..........RUNNING LEAN (Bank 1). Too much oxygen and not enough gas. One oxygen sensor went bad, they control the amount of fuel thats dropped in the cylinders as the onboard computer comands them to. One is located in the manifold from the engine, and one is half way down the exsust system. When the oxygen sensor senses a change and the wrong mixture of fuel and air, it tells the computer in the car and it makes changes. A bad oxygen sensor will cause the vehicle to burn more gas than it should and can cost at the pump. The onboard computer is hooked to many sensors under the hood to keep things balanced out, and when it finds a part going bad the CHECK ENGINE light will come on. One bad sensor can cause other sensors to overwork themselves causing the engine to malfunction and not run as it should. Heres what they look like if you have a problem with them

Good post, the 'poor man's' approach is what I do, you need a manual to interperate the flashing, but i do the test by jumping the A.L.D.L, after which a series of flashes 9sorta like morse code) is sent by the dashboard lights. NOW, I gotta say(knock on wood) that it's been awhile and the newer cars may not have the aldl(assembly line diagnostic link)

The "96" and up have the connector located under the dash next to the fuses, but anything under that is in the engine compartment.
