Well I've just bought a cistern hand pump and I want to put it on top of a barrel but I have NO idea on how to install it! Any info appreciated.

Well that must be a fairly large barrel. You'll need a few things, pipe to fit the pumps base and a foot valve. That's what we call them. It's a piece that goes on the bottom of the pipe to keep the water from draining back to the static height. This will make it quite easy to get the water going each time you go to pump it out. I guess the first thing is to mount the pump where you wish it to be. No farther than 25 ft or aprox 7 meters from the water intake source. Then measure the length of pipe you'll need to reach 3/4 way down the barrel. Fit the pipe together and install the foot valve. Now connect it to the pumps base. There should be some type of coupler on the pump to do this. Then fill the pump with water, most likely through the top, and begin pumping the water should be close to follow. You may have to re prime it a few times though.

Yup thats a pitcher pump also called a cistern pump. You don't really need the foot valve if your only pumping out of a shallow barrel.

How big a barrel you looking to use? I have some plastic barrels that I put a faucet toward the bottom to connect a hose to. Works pretty good.

Like the man said, just a bit of pipe from the pump to near the bottom of the drum. It woill probably have a marble/ball nbareing as it's valve, so for just outa a drum shouldn't need a foot valve too, but if it's just a leather piston washer you will possibly have to prime it if the washer dries out.
