as long as the pollen is rubbed over the lobes in the female your chances are good

Sometimes you can tie the flower shut the night before to keep the bees from stealing it, and that they will do if yer not out there on time

here's what i found: There is no known cure and the plant will certainly die. The best course of action is to remove the diseased plant.

Jeanette, it would have had to happened really quick, I didn't see any signs of it.Do your plants look like this All the time, NOTICE the darkened leafs. They will look like this for only a frw days...then start dieing. One sure way to tell... is by cutting one of the sick looking secondary vines, IF YOU HAVE the wilt, when you cut the vine, pull the vine apart there will be a "stringy" sap (bacterial growth and associated resins)that stretches between the cuts of "freshly cut" section of a stem, If so then your plant has bacterial wilt.

well they are not that far gone yet but i do have quite a few leaves that are yellow and dying more to the base, hopefully i just paniced... i looked for signs of vine borers and didn't find any...the parts of the vine that are in the grass look better... my mellon has something like it to.. toward the base is all wilty and browning and the ends are green and nice.
