think i'm gonna put Big Bob in the ground before he eats some one my question now is: squash vine borers are really a big problem for me, if i treat the ground with pesticide before i plant will it do me any good? (no organic lectures please )

You might as well spray roundup if you insist on using pesticedes.

Jeanette, the Borer leaves the plant, after he, or they KILL it, and goes back into the soil to overwinter. The adult svb "moth" emerges in june. If you take action now, even if you simply look for the hairy looking coccoons when you turn the soil, it will make a difference. Of course, cocoons in other areas will still produce moths. A watch for the adult moth flying, in a zig zag pattern, will alert you to their presence. A collar, or remay, even cheese cloth, will prevent the larvae, which is layed by the moth at the base of your plant, from boring into Bob!

Do you have a picture of Big Bob? How do yo know when to plant it outside? I mean do you wait till your plants has 4- 6 leaves?
