We are fortunate here in the UK to have much milder winters than you folks in the US, and indeed locally we have had no snow at all so far this winter although it has been trying to snow today. Consequently the garden is beginning to awaken from its slumber with the first signs of spring beginning to show... This photo of my front garden was taken last Saturday, 1st March: Whilst this is the rear garden (taken through the kitchen window):

Thanks for the kind comments. Actually I think it looks a little drab at the moment, and it will be nice to cut the lawn again although I might leave that till next week. It will look a lot better once the forget-me-nots begin to flower, as on this shot from 15th April last year...

You're all very kind. Of course I have carefully excluded the clutter around the other greenhouse and the chaotic mess that passes for a vegetable plot, but a little poetic licence never hurt anyone. I like forget-me-nots. They are all self-sown and are no trouble at all. All we tend to do is to transplant the wayward ones, usually around this time of year and then they fill the garden with colour for around six to eight weeks. They are also a very good weed suppressant. The rear garden is 43ft wide by around 60ft long, and westerly facing. It is fairly private and the mature trees at the bottom effectively cut off the view of the rearward neighbours from around April to November. We still have a degree of privacy though year round, even when the trees aren't in leaf. In some respects I would quite like a bigger garden, but I suppose that could be easily and cheaply achieved by sacrificing part - or all - of the lawn. Then again it is nice to have a large lawn for relaxing in the summer. There is a high proportion of shrubbery and perennial plants in the garden but I also like the diversity of summer bedding, the majority of which we grow on site in the two greenhouses. These are then turned over to growing tomatoes and peppers but space can be at a premium in May as the new tomato/pepper plants vie for space with the soon to go out bedding plants. Space tends to be at a premium anyway as I always seem to grow too many tomatoes. It was 55 plants last year, and ten sweet peppers and two varieties of chili pepper. Fortunately some of the tomatoes were happy to be accommodated outside. I'll post more updates as the season progresses, and will be looking forward to seeing your own garden photos.

It certainly is refreshing to see some greenery this time of year, even if it is in photo from Britain.
On the right of the back yard photo - there is what looks to be a bird feeder (?). What are the corn-cob-looking things hanging from it?
Thanks for those photos, Spruance.

there is what looks to be a bird feeder (?). What are the corn-cob-looking things hanging from it? JT Not corn-cobs but peanut feeders JT. For some reason the birds don't seem to like the latest batch of peanuts which is why the feeders are still full. The ones to the right are seed feeders. Phil, if it was ever as cold as that here I don't think anyone would venture out, snow clearing or not. The very worst I have experienced here is -12C overnight in January 1987. At the time the town was virtually cut off by snow drifts for three days and everyone was walking to work as the roads were virtually impassable. Fortunately we don't see a lot of snow these days.

You haven't said which part of Surrey but the county of Surrey is located just south of London, and roughly 130 miles south of Boston, which is in the county of Lincolnshire. This Google map should give you a better idea.

Ah well not to worry it's been nice and sunny today so most of it has gone. This was taken just before 2pm GMT... Just so long as we don't get it again tonight. From the look of the sky I think we very well might.
