Are y'all getting any? Seed catalogs, I mean. I got about 4 so far and ordered online from Baker Creek (rareseeds.com) but haven't got theirs yet for 2010. I don't see much garden talk here for the last month or so, I was out in the sticks with no internet, that's MY excuse.......

I have gotten only 3 seed cats and none from Bakers Creek and I did order from them last year. I take them to bed and mark them what I would like. Then I can order what I need. I need to get to the seed house here and get seed for the exchange.

My fav catalog to LOOK at is Thompson & Morgan, but generally I can't afford their prices, lol. Most interesting catalog is probably JLHudson, they take in seeds for trade and they get some really odd stuff from around the world, plus the supply is vastly different each year. 2 catalogs I got yesterday, I flipped thru them and had to say "nothing new there". Sad.

So far I have received 6 catalogs. One was a 'Professional Vegetable Growers Catalog' from Harris seeds. Guess they suspect I am a large commercial grower. Of well. Got a lot of good seed selections. Haven't received the Baker catalog yet. I requested one about 3 weeks ago. Make that 7 catalogs. I received the 'Totally Tomatoes' one yesterday. That is where I bought most of the seeds last year. If you order $5, you get 2 free seeds packs. This year they are sending NuMex Sunrise Pepper and Red Alert Tomato seeds. I won't be buying many seeds this year, since I have been collecting from last years picking. The mater and peppers seeds that I collected I am calling the 'Surprise Seeds. That is because the signs we made last year were destroyed by the rain and hot sun, so I don't know what kind each were. This year, I have the 'Plant Markers' that you write on. As I plant each variety, I am making a sign that will go out to the garden when I transplant next year. I am gonna have two gardens next year. One just for hot peppers. My brother likes them and keeps telling me that the peppers I give him aren't very hot. So... I will till up another plot just for them.
I am seeing in my near future another forum to sign up for.
I believe it is called 'PHIRE'. "The Hotter The Better'.

Yup, that's a good board. If you're brother can eat naga's and fuss about the lack of heat. better check his pulse.

I have only gotten two so far, one isnt even any good. I was looking for a list of mail order cats on line to see if maybe anyone has condensed one for people like us. But I didnt find any good ones. Mother Earth news has something on their site that directs customers towards something like that. Although, I have to say, the list I see from the above posts is better than anything I have found so far.
Any really good company to order a BIG variety of Heirloom seeds?

JC, have you added up what it will cost for garden seed? You grow your plants ot set out? I added up what I had marked in the Pine Tree Cat I would like. Tis only way to get some plants, and what plants they sell are high. Still waiting on Baker Creek Cat.

Colorado: To tell ya the truth I'm not to impressed with the baker creek catalog this year, it's a bit thinner then last, don't get me wrong there are still some decent selections.
AS far as seed goes I haven't put an order together yet because I plan on changing some of my selections, but pullin last seasons bills I see I spent some ware around $150.00 for plant seed and about $60.00 for other seed. Now that's not including fertilizer, lime, fuel, Irrigation, cover crop, and some new equipment.

BC sent me sweet corn as sub for field corn. I said could sub but that is not close as two different things. Theywere out of some things I ordered. I will not mark it they can sub again. Some subs were satuff I had. I plan to order early this year and hope.
And taxes on the land too. I have not did any cover crops. I plan to order the other seed plates for the push seeder. I have to go through seed boxes and see what I need order. No use ordering more of what I have.

Colorado: As far as seed goes if we plant what we have expanded to, I will definitely have to start savin my own seed in the future. As far as this season is concerned we have already spent better then $300.00 on seed garlic, but that was to get started in a commercial sales venture. I'm trying to get a Organic Farm off the ground either selling to farm markets or perhaps a CSA or both. I just want to make sure I am offering enough of a verity and good quality as I can, last season was a experiment for us with the garlic and it did well, but our tomatoes were a failure due to the early blight and my lack of knowledge on how to handle the situation. This season I should be more prepared for that situation.
If I factor property tax into the equation, that will put a big bite in my forecast profit as my taxes are in the $8000.00 range of course I can split that between house and farm say 60% homestead 40% farm so figure $3,200.00 for farm tax. that's still pretty hefty. We have also been working on putting up a hoop house to extend our growing season and our income. To make a go of Organic produce today isn't an easy venture, but I love a challenge and it makes me feel good when people are pleased with what we grow. As you can see I love farming, it's not been my carrier since living here required that I make a much better living then farming would have afforded me, however now that I'm retired I can spend the time needed and our children are grown and on there own so.....why not.

Well RH Shumway's 2010 cat came in yesterdays mail, also a local supplier's cat came Martin Supply so that's about nine so far. Just glancing over Shumway's prices and to me they seam a bit high. I found that Franchi seeds are reasonably priced and are distributed by Seeds from Italy P.O. Box 149 Winchester, Ma. www.growitalian.comTel: 781 721 5904 They have a tremendous selection of specialty seed, Organic as well. To tell the truth I think most commercial seed company's don't give you the real selections that are rare and original heirlooms, and that's what I'm trying to accomplish here on our little piece of earth. Ya know something different but good.

I only have 5 acres so my taxes are not so bad but old house. $1300 I figure this year or about that. Will know what by end of next month when I get the bill. Irrigation be around $277 for the year. I am only county and not any city taxes. But taxes on it will cut the IRS tax and SS tax. Profit is Taxable income. I have to pay the property taxes and irrigation water no matter what. I have not had to factor it in or the pipe line. But the water I do some. Share for the yard and rest for garden.
I had not heard of that seed company. I will take a look. I want to keep my seed bills down. I buy in bulk here at the seed house in the city. Yes, limited . Send off for other things. I have started saving tomato seed and some hot pepper. I have gotto keep the hot peppers awayf from the sweet. I did saving some sweet pepper in a long red that is good. Few seed in the pimentos is how I got. My son asked me you sure that is a sweet pepper. so he finally tasted it. He was eating peppers even for lunch that time hunting. DIL likes hot ones to cook with. I need get into more seed saving. I did save couple cumcumbers and some zucihini seed. I save squash seed okay. But could mix and I really do not care on winter squash as still be good to eat. I will try to space them out bit to try to avoid it.

Got my seeds from Italy catalog yesterday Ive lost count, but seeing how the weather is goin here Ill have plenty of time to read.
Lots of snow coming down and lots more expected today and tomorrow. How are ya doin Colorado? Are ya shoveled out yet? I don't do any snow shoveling here, we have a 4X4 pick-up truck that does a good job on the snow. With my Heart I can't do any snow shovelin any more, and if things get to bad I have a plow fer the tractor.
