Rita I believe what they are telling folks is the soil has to be adjusted to a neutral PH for you to get the most out of the fertilizer another-words a PH of 6-7.5 is considered neutral and what the old farmers used to say is you need Lime to get the fertilizer to work faster but if you plant the same day you lime and fertilize you can burn new plants. Work the lime and fertilizer into your soil at least three days before planting. I prefer a week ahead of time but three days is OK. Since you also have compost to amend the soil it will speed up the process. I would use a low formula of Organic fertilizer like 2-4-4 or 3-5-4, But some like 5-5-5 or 10-10-10 in chemical fertilizer. That's your call. Just remember what those numbers represent first # N= Nitrogen (fast green) second # P= Potassium (plant food) Third # K= Potash (Root Growth).

Thanks Jo ... I will do just that ... Does that mean I can't work the composted manure into it as well ? I don't know if thats the case I will just wait till the fall to lime then start again in the spring ... I have a good month before I start planting anything out ..

I posted a piece on testing your soil about a month or so ago, I would work the composted manure and some pulverized lime into the soil now. Since you will be another Month before planting. Then comes fall test the soil add what is recommended to get the PH you want and then next spring...early add the other materials such as Organic fertilizer 2-4-4 and some compost, work that in good and you should do just fine.

Phil may not agree with me on this Rita, but I feel you should spread some pulverized lime on the amended are and till all of that in. What ever the PH level was on that ground it will be changed by amending it with those products. Lime does take time to work there is no question, But Pulverized lime does work a bit sooner then granular. It will help this seasons planting. I can't wait for Phil to bite me on this one.

We finally have our garden all planted and can relax a bit. This after adding 2800lbs of ag lime and another 900lb of composted manure this spring. This is our third year for this garden spot and we're finally getting the clay we started with into a decent garden spot.

*sigh* a flat garden, how i wish...... Looks great Rita! I hqve garlic in what was the tater garden last year, and some up real nice that overwintered. Got a couple kinds of corn seeds today, small amnts of each. Have the sunflower seeds. Raining today. Maybe next weekend I'll weed out the veggie patch and get er ready for planting. Yesterday Marton rebuilt most of the stone walls in the garden that the winter got the best of. I started dividing a bunch of baby perrenials out to sell @ my mommas day plant sale. I moved that flippin torch lily. It kicked my arse! but, she's moved! ((Where is the heating pad?))
