Here's some pics of my gourds. If the weather co-operates I might get mature ones, lol. Had to tie up a vine yesterday where 3 gourds had pulled it to the ground. These are Canteen gourds, you cut the stem off flush and make a hole in the rim for a canteen.

Gourds are fun and I usually have a few vines of a different kind each year, sometimes 2 kinds. I still have Luffas around here that I grew 7-8 years ago. Of course you're welcome to seeds when they get ripe, I'm guess October 1st or thereabouts.

The vines usually do get long but you can prune them a little or tie them back to keep them from taking over. Lots of people here plant a dipper gourd vine by the guy wire to the electric pole and let it run up that.

I've grown a few ornamental type gourds, you know, the mixed warty types. But never attempted the birdhouse or bushels or this one, Cool! Maybe now that we've cut down some of the old dead trees in our yard, I'll have more light to grow vines up the house. Here's a Bottle gourd that an artist friend sent me for Christmas. She says it was two years old before she painted it.

Ooo they are nice! I would have made a bowl out of it! I used to grow gourds. Probably still have some out in the building. (might be dry by now !!) but got into the winter squashes and didn't have room !! I have seen them painted up like Santas and all sorts of things. Very cute.

I think I got my seeds from seedman.com. I swapped off the gourds but found one in the garden clean-up, don't know if the freezing temps of late have hurt the seeds or not.

Thanks for the info. I don't know if I have the room for them. If I can't buy them, then I don't have to worry about making room for them either

I have an uncle that would take one like the one pictured here and after dried would cut top off and sew leather around the top an put leather strap on it and may or may not paint something on it. He makes some nice stuff..

I've finally decided that if Baker Creek doesn't have canteen gourds by the time I place an order in February, I will buy the Mayo Bule gourd instead. It is pearshaped with warty bumps all over it...I just can't resist
