Anything you all can tell me about growing cannas? My Aunt is giving me some, but all I know about them is they grow from a rhizome and I have to dig them up every fall. Any growing tips out there?

Down here in the south we leave em in the ground... We spray water ours at least once a nite down here.. They really like a sandy loam, to spread the rhizones....We use an organically inclined fertilizer to spray em every few weeks... We use that and they love coffee grounds...

Down here where I'm at the take over if your not careful. I've dug them up to thin out and left them right on top of the ground intending to get back to them and they would keep right on growing. Tough as nails and thrives on neglect. Full sun or full shade, they don't care. Put them somewhere you don't mind them taking over and where you won't want to have to dig again and leave them alone. We don't even mulch them for winter really, they are forgotten about til they start regrowing in the spring. Lots of colors to. Again here they don't care what kind of soil there in either. Clay, sand, loam, gravel, lol. Trudy

I think she's concerned about pulling them out for winter... She's up north somewhere... Any of our northern Gardeners have Cannas? Maybe they can help her too...

Well, I think I'm gonna let them do their thing for the summer and then dig up half of them for the winter and leave half in. I guess my aunt leaves hers in the ground and she's down near Detroit. They don't get it quite as cold as we do up here, but the ground does freeze, so we'll see what happens. Thanks for the tips. I hope they flower like crazy!

I grew up in WI and a friend of my mom's grew them when I was a kid. Based on the way they came up in the same place every year, I'd say she left them in the ground too. But, you'd be safe to follow your plan of digging up half. I would lay a heavy mulch on the ones I left in the ground though!
