Burpee's new catalog has a variety of Perilla that's colored the same as Coleus. You may know it resembles it already in appearance, but it's taller. I use the "wild" Perilla around here, keeping a patch fairly clear of other weeds near my house. If you're not familiar with it, it makes a great tea, fresh or dried. It kinda grows on you, might not like it the first time you try it, it has a LOUD aroma, very floral-like. Being a mint-family plant, it also has some variation between plants, so try different ones and propagate those. Back to the point, Burpee's perilla, does anybody know for a fact if it's gene-altered? Some of their stuff is. I would like to get it, 3 plants for WHAT? $13.95??? Ouch.

I've learned over the years of buying seeds and combing through endless piles of catalogs, that when you see that kind of price, the mention of "exclusive", and no mention of a true seed quality statement from the supplier, it is most likely altered seed or has been manipulated in some way. Please don't call Burpee on me!!!

Vickalee: That's about what I was thinking, just was hoping somebody might know for sure and certain. It might make a good ornamental that's edible too. Just don't want it if it adds to the whole GMO thing. I think nursery/seed company people are entitled to make a profit for all their hybridizing and other work, after all it is work. If I really like a "cross" or a simple mutation, I'll keep growing it and try to let it stabilize to what I want. But not GMO.

TennOC- Good phor you! The sad part, like all the GMO's in our food, it's not getting labeled... and no one is volunteering tell you any of this stuff. Have a good one!

it is sad that so much of our food is gmo. especially in the common grocery stores. I keep coming back in my head to the same question. Don't we have a right to know what we are consumeing? deb

deb, it's a case of taking that right. When everybody insists on it, it will happen(labeling).

I have some of that perilla. A friend gave me seeds. The color is beautiful. It adds a lot to the landscape.
