I just took a dose of it last night to help me sleep. It stinks, so once u get it past your nose an mouth its sleepy time in about an hour. I don't know anything else about it, but can try and look it up for you this afternoon. Crazy or Phil may have experience with it. trudy

Here's a good descipion that I found. Medicinal Action and Uses---Valerian is a powerful nervine, stimulant, carminative and antispasmodic.
It has a remarkable influence on the cerebro-spinal system, and is used as a sedative to the higher nerve centres in conditions ofnervous unrest, St. Vitus's dance, hypochrondriasis, neuralgic pains and the like.
The drug allays pain and promotes sleep. It is of especial use and benefit to those suffering from nervous overstrain, as it possesses none of the after-effects produced by narcotics.
During the recent War, when air-raids were a serious strain on the overwrought nerves of civilian men and women, Valerian, prescribed with other simple ingredients, taken in a single dose, or repeated according to the need, proved wonderfully efficacious, preventing or minimizing serious results.
Though in ordinary doses, it exerts an influence quieting and soothing in its nature upon the brain and nervous system, large doses, too often repeated, have a tendency to produce pain in the head, heaviness and stupor.
It is commonly administered as Tinctura Valerianae Ammoniata, and often in association with the alkali bromides, and is sometimes given in combination with quinine, the tonic powers of which it appreciably increases.
Oil of Valerian is employed to a considerable extent on the Continent as a popular remedy for cholera, in the form of cholera drops, and also to a certain extent in soap perfumery.
Ettmuller writes of its virtues in strengthening the eyesight, especially when this is weakened by want of energy in the optic nerve.
The juice of the fresh root, under the name of Energetene of Valerian, has of late been recommended as more certain in its effects, and of value as a narcotic in insomnia, and as an anti-convulsant in epilepsy. Having also some slight influence upon the circulation, slowing the heart and increasing its force, it has been used in the treatment of cardiac palpitations.
Valerian was first brought to notice as a specific for epilepsy by Fabius Calumna in 1592, he having cured himself of the disease with it.

That I cannot say. The info in this arctical says it is soothing and helps you sleep. Maybe a bit to strong of an herb for daytime use. Unless used at a lower dose than most available. I belive Kava Kava root would be better for anxiety.

Kava Kava is good, St. Johns Wort is good, that stuff grows like wild fire, Hey XdX, I got a bunch of that, Flowers, already ground to a powder. if you would like some to try; However, It is a anti-depressant, and shouldn't be taken without consult.

X you must first identify the type of Valerian it is!!!! This is one herb thats prone to deviation from its original genus. When using ANY herb you must be sure it is the proper herb and not a sub-genus of that herb. Some could be fatal or make you ill or do nothing at all. IT IS NEVER A WISE IDEA TO TAKE AN HERB THAT YOU ARE UNSURE OF!!! Only take herbs that you know are the true herb you want.

I have taken the Valerian root before and slept hard and felt drunk when I got up...But I have no tolerance for anything. The tea sounds like a better idea till ya get a feel for it.
There is an ingredient in St Johns wort that they make all the anti depressant drugs from, but it takes a LOT of it.
Any natural herb will help long term they do not BANG your system like prescription drugs. There are many herbs to try for light anxiety. Some will calm and sooth, some will lift your mood.
Lots of teas can be made from herbs !!

Valerian is very strong, and the "morning after" effect is very real! But, I can say the same for many prescription medications, got some from the Doc before fer my back, couldn't take the darn things at bedtime like I was supposed too, so I'd take them about 7 at night, a lil giddy, a lil sleepy, but it reduced the hangover in the morning, I am sure this would also work with V.
