What herbs I do have are scattered around the yard. I wanted to make a regular bed. Thyme is one I have wanted and haven't got.

Doug, if you've got a few cinder blocks around I'd use them as "pots" for the herbs. Many times herbs tend to spread out and take over. I'd dig a hole just deep enough for the top of the block to be exposed and then plant the herbs in there. That way the blocks won't dry out, and the herbs will be kept in check.

So many herb seeds are tiny, and some like basil need light to sprout. Sterile medium, keep moist till they sprout, water from below.

you can love them to death...the thyme, rosemary and sage prefer dryer, poorer soil. the tarragon and parsley like richer moister condiditions. i grow 2 types of basil and i gotta say if youve never tried little leaf or dwarf type basils you really should. the flavor and scent is more complex ( like lemon and cinnamon at the same time) and they dont oxidize as badly when cut like a lettuce leaf or broadleaf italian style basil does. basil grown in sunlight will often grow poorly, and even if it does adjust -the resulting crop will often have a hotter , less desirable flavor, anyway. letting basil go to seed will cause the scent and flavor to diminish greatly. one herb thati did not see mentioned ,that easy to grow and you can even harvest the seed easily is dill.

Every year I try to grow tarragon, every year it fails, it's like mint, evasive, yes, but can't grow it. I have a rosemary plant from last year, it grew very big. I pretty much covered it over the winter with leaf mulch thinking it would be OK. It lost it's leaves, and the now barren branches are bendable, but no new shoots? What is going on here, is the thing dead? joyce

If they are "bendable" an not breaking due to being brittle, I'd say wait an give your rosemary more time. trudy
