Quote from viable-herbal.com In folk medicine, catnip leaves and flowers are usually steeped to make a pleasant tasting tea. Consumed prior to bedtime, catnip tea is widely believed to hasten slumber and aid in achieving a restful nights sleep. It is also employed as a remedy in the treatment of tension and anxiety, and is mentioned as being a useful calmative for hyperactive children.
The primary known constituents of catnip include essential oils (carvacrol, citronellal, geraniol, nepetol, nepetelactone, pulegone, thymol), iridoids, and tannins.
Catnip is also listed as a mild diaphoretic, helpful in eliminating toxins from the body, as well as acting as a carminative to support digestion, relieve upset stomach, and control the symptoms of diarrhea.

My son had colic when he was born and his great-grandma made him catnip tea. He loved it and he slept finally. My husband worked with a man who grew it and he gave us a lot of it. It works really well on collicy babies, I don't know of it's other uses. But it is safe for humans. A lot of the babies in our families have drunk it and they like it too.

Catnip for me has been something to give to cats as a treat. Long ago I had a barn and dried shocks of it tied and hung from one of the alley-way posts.
At least a few of the neighbor cats were impatient and would throw themselves across the alley-way to rub up against the shocks as they fell past them. It was fun to watch.
Their urgency did speed my making up some fun socks stuffed with catnip, for their entertainment.
