Finally got most of the old dead canes cut and pulled out, just a couple left. I might get one of those strainer things that clamps to the table this year, if I pick enough berries. Talking about the squeezo that separates tomato seeds from juice. Anybody got brand/model recommendations? I had a cheap plastic one, worthless.Still have a couple bags frozen with seeds, need to do something with those soon.

I have a food mill that does the same thing but it doesn't clamp on to anything it just sits over a bowl .. was about 20 bucks at bed bath and beyond

That one looks good. What I need is to remove seed and skins from tomatoes, and remove seeds from blackberries. If you think it will do both of those, it sounds like the one phor me.

Yes it will do both and mash up the fruit for you .. I used it for tomato seeds and skins and it worked great .. you may want to look on amazon for one thats just at the 25 dollar mark .. search FOOD MILL .. so you don't have to pay shipping

I guess it just ain't my day, lol. Amazon don't recognize me, then I went back to BBB and ordered, or tried to. "Can't complete your order cause your address isn't the same as on card". That's bull so I called, they had put a hold on the money-TWICE. That got under my old saggy skin! Cancelled the order till I cool off, lol. Sooner or later I'll find one. Why does a business have a website and not a good IT guy? Bad place to cut corners.

Ohhh that would a ticked me off too Mo!! Sheesh!! well when you can order just check and make sure its one that will work for you .. some have legs that will fit over a bowl or pot .. some don't .. I should start using mine for more than just fruit .. I only think of it for canning .. but can be used to grind all sorts of veggies for soups etc

I found the exact same strainer...at the local Ace hardware... here's my email to Amazon:

It got here last evening. Left out a bag of frozen tomatoes to try it on today. If it separates the seeds and skins good I'll make chili. If it doesn't I'll cuss a while and make chili... ;D

Aluminum is one of the most plentiful elements on the earth. (the rockhound in me coming out) Not in purified form but aluminum oxide is in most dust and sand along with silicon dioxide, so we prolly breath in a ton in a lifetime. I have heard tho of people reading about the alzheimer's connection and throwing out all their AL pots. I think they're probably AT LEAST as safe as those coated ones, you know with the coating that peels off.

Rita, I want to thank you for pointing me in the right direction on the food mill. It is SO NICE to have something that works as advertised, even better. Finally got it out and washed it up and ran thru a bag of frozen whole tomatoes in no time at all. I took all the rest out of the freezer and hope to process them tomorrow.

Cast iron, then stainless steel here,do have a few aluminum utensils,we have an aluminum tomato seeder dealie too.For cooking,I will skip AL,but limited use like a utensil I will use it.

WOW I may be with you on the blackberries Mo .. Just cleaned up that area of my yard I didn't realize that they spread like wildfire they almost took over my pond Hopefully it doesn't hurt them that I trimmed them to where I want them to be I only have SS And Cast Iron

Rita, trimming blackberries won't kill them BUT to get the most for your effort, just trim the tips off of the new growth, the green canes with no blooms or berries and do it in high summer. That way they will throw out more side-shoots, which increases your blooms for the next year by several times. Then after you pick all the berries, cut those canes down to the ground and pull them out. They only bear once anyway. Good luck with your new find, I hope they taste good.

They were incredible last year and I hope I get way more this year .. If I had noticed them growing so rapidly I would of trimmed them sooner . .. we now have a block compost heap going on in the woods on one mans property .. thinking he will have LOTS of blackberries next year they were even growing in my pond or rather rooting I am letting them root them selves to cover an area but am paying attention to where they plant themselves .. I want a nice little patch but don't want a field Thanks for the info Mo

Gidday
Little old me way down under is confused again. You started this thread March 6.
Now methought that yall up there were different to us down here, like I thought blackberries were harvested in the autumn or as you say fall and that is what it is here so shouldn't you be having spring.
I have lately been thinking about going and trying to find blackberries when I get a chance in a few days time.

They are mid summer for us .. they are just waking up now .. no flowers or anything yet ... I think we are just so anticipating them that we can't hardly wait

Last year I moved one plant. Over the winter, it made two other little plants When they transplant they don't take long to become an entire patch. But speaking of loving them, hubs thinks I should go get more plants cuz apparently 3 just isn't enough?? Next year at this time I'll be cursing them as they come up in the lawn and the neighbours driveway....For now though, I'm going to plan on making me some jam....

I did finally get the frozen blackberries from the freezer and run them thru the food mill, good results. I got 2 quarts and a tad of pulpy juice. Decided not to make jelly, just a syrup. I have put it on pancakes, french toast and ice cream, all winners. Normally the recipe for jelly is 4 cups juice, 4 cups sugar and a pack of pectin. Left out the pectin and used 3 cups juice, 4 sugar and one cup water. It has a good taste, but a little runny for syrup. I'll add just a touch of pectin or gelatin or agar or something next time to give it more body. The berries are already setting, lots of green ones out there now, so maybe it'll be an early crop.
