Plenty of really hot powdered red pepper applied to things you don't want nibbled on will help but will have to be re-applied after it rains. You don't say why you can't fence but really that the only way to keep them out. Electric fence is cheaper than 8 ft high field fence.

yup the hot pepper is a good idea...the thing is if you have deer you'll probably get squirrels ...sounds like alot of ppl I know..........

I've tried a variety of methods when we lived in the country a few years ago. Can't say whether or not any one of them worked better than any other, as I'm an "all in" kinda guy - meaning I use several methods at once. Here are some that came to mind: moth balls cayenne pepper hair clippings (human or dog) pie tins tied up (so they clank in the wind) urine (around the parameter) - (gross, i know, but I was desperate) Hope this helps!

Yes I was going to say something that makes noise .. the cd's will keep birds away ..Well unless they get used to them, I know when you get your hair cut spreading that around will keep rabbits away I am not sure about Deer .. But this time of year the birds will steal it for nests ...

Electric fences have been used for everything from snails to elephants so you could try one for deer.

Unfortunately if fencing isn't an option, gardening may not be either.

where we are at, there is more field than woods...less deer... But we have them...once or twice in 14 years I have seen one in the yard...but never the garden. Most of the garden is fenced...but with only 4' fence...to keep dogs, cats and small critters out
I credit being nearly deer free...to our old dog... He roamed the yard and made sure critters never stayed long...if they even entered the property... This year, without faithful Ol Tank tho...we may have a problem

I had a friend ask me this just last week and so I looked it up and these are some new method's I had not heard of: Hang strong scented soap bars(the stronger the better) from tree's,and hardy plants in the garden and surrounding the garden to keep deer away. The picture showed soap hanging from trees (GREAT GARDEN FORMULAS BY ORGANIC GARDENING PUBLISHERS MAGAZINE,JOAN BENJAMIN AND DEBORAH L.MARTIN) also ,I've read that deer hate strong scented plants so border the garden with these according to: PATTY SIMONS,a former deer rehabilitator in Austin Texas. Madagascar periwinkles rotunda Chinese holly common foxgloves wormwood lemon thyme spearmint thorny blackberries lambs ear Rosemary sweet autumn Clementius then i would think: garlic chives, honeysuckle, roses, penny royal peppermint, nasturtiums and tons of really hot hot peppers. Good luck and if nothing else, try praying a hedge of protection over your garden, can't hurt

At the ranch deer came to the garden. They came down the Gulch and across the road and hopped the fence. Our gradens were int field. Seemed to come over just one place. Dad put rags dipped in Keroscen on the fence there. That helped.
Here we have deer in town and they graze lawns and what ever. mY front fence is just chain link anad they can hop it okay I am sure. Not all fenced in . No fence in back. I have seen deer one time here by my house and more tracks in the yard. And I have only been here since start of the year.
At ranch some one suggested can lids hung over the row. My brother said that would attract the deer as they are curiouse and would come see what it was. CD would flash more I would think. Maybe birds. Here I will have crows as I have seen some in town all winter. At ranch the crows/birds went for corn seed. Dad stoped that. I have no fence acrossed the back down one side and little at the front. I have no room to plant things and money to buy that,
I guess something that smells to them I will try. And put up before that start having a taste of things, I have some hot dried peppers. But I don't think they smell.
Yes fence and hot wire best but no hot fence in town I would guess. Wood fence across the alley for some.

I do know that deer are curious, they could be attracted to sumpin shiny Colorado...Kerosene on a rag could work...thye dislike anything "human" I can say from experience that bar soap, Irish spring always worked for me...placed around plantings will deter deer...or they at least won't stay long

I read that if you string up monofilament fishing line around your garden paramater on posts just about chest high on the deer they cant see it,and when they walk into the line it startles them so in the future they avoid the area. I have tried this but only with 15 pound masons line and it seems to keep the deer from grazing away in my garden, especially at night A big loud dog could also work or a radio playing at night.

I never thought of fish line. Thankyou. One lady stuing up yarn and they seem to think hot wire and stayed back. But how long that works. But deer would have to know what a hot wire was first I would think.

I can attest to the fact that when I had no line up the deer would graze liberally in my garden , but when the line was there they just seemed to stay out which worked all season long.I figured it was worth a try.

Actually my hubbs urinates around our Blue spruce to keep the rabbits away, only thing is he only can do it on the north side of the yard because the trees are doubled in rows.. On the south side is where all the rabbit go ... I told him to urinate in a bucket and throw it out there

I am in town. I had a deal in the mail some time back and I did not bring up here for deer mix. Jerry Baker what ever.? Trying to sell things. Seems it had eggs in it. I have over two hunder feet of not fence. If just arpund the garden beds woud take 6 posts to holdup yard or fish line. Tis last rime for a bunch justdown the alley.

Try the fishing line, I ran three strands at different levels for all size deer, was very effective in my case.
