Finally! Someone has found a possible solution. I hope this turns out to be actual fact and not some bid for research money, etc.

Now I propose a big ship full of pestalotiopsis microspora (the fungi in question) to cruise to the Pacific ocean spot where all the plastic thrown away in California floats and begin re-cycling it into a useful by-product of some kind. It's a light at the end of the tunnel.....
