Gidday Well I am sorry and I hope I don't ruffle too many feathers here, but I just have to strongly disagree with what has been posted here anout straw bale gardening. Straw breaks down into an excellent compost and it appears that some don't really know much about the chemical content of straw. I assure you, you can grow perfectly good vegetables in nothing but straw, provided that it has been gron in a healthy soil and has not been doused with chemicals. No ruffles here, everything is what it is,works for some, some it doesnt. I think you nailed it,its the chemicals that make it succeed or fail, mine rotted just like I would expect a chemical to kill,so i reckon in my case that was some polluted bales.

So Ruth and I were in the fields today cleaning up to get ready for this years planting, we have a ton of debris to clean up from the trees that were cut down after the storm damage from Sandy. I'm seeing some sign of deer coming in from the fence that was taken down by the trees that fell also. I have a company coming in from Mass. to put up deer fence soon. It's the same one that did a fellow farmers property, they did a nice job. Jack as far as I'm concerned you haven't ruffled and feathers here, the type of farming we do has nothing to do with straw bail farming. It's not something that we would be interested in doing as we need to grow on a larger area for market sales. I really haven't a clue about it anyway, and it's ruff enough keeping track of our own way of farming. At our age we still have lots to learn as well, it's just a matter of having the time. It's only 5:15PM and we are ready to crash. Were did the time go anyway....we started at 5:00AM. Ruth is at her desk next to me nodding out doing her checking account.

I love hearing about new ways and ideas to plant and grow. I'll bet that's why most of us are here.

Another post is under Build soil were I took pictures of my composting and showed my tomato plants with news papper and later on commented about using straw mulch too. That was in 2010 and I lost all my tomato plants that season.

I used straw for mulch around my tomatoes and peppers for a couple years, mostly to keep down weeds and save watering. It was wheat straw from Lowe's...so it was trucked in from somewhere else since this ain't a prime wheat-growing area. I THINK it was the source of Bermuda grass that took over the garden, can't prove that tho. I was putting in less hours and let the grass get a grip. Now I have that area mowed and garden in containers which suits me ok. The straw would break down in one year and made good topsoil.

Thanks for the thread. I'm going to use the newspaper idea. Newspaper will work well, just leave the glosey stuff out. You can place shreded leaves on top of that as well.

If there was a market for leaves I'd be rich. We have probably 100 gigantic oak trees, 15 pecan trees, a few dogwoods, and some others that drop leaves every fall. Whoever lived here before did not keep the yard up and when we moved in we found trees and shrubs that were totally covered over with tons of leaves.

Oh but there IS a market for leaves, well ..kinda sorta... Oak Leaf Mold...a small bag costs about 5 bux...I used it once for mulch around tomatoes..I used it on a row, Red plastic mulch on another and black plastic on a third as a side by side comparison trial.. Here's a link to how to make your leaf mold..which is not only great mulch, but a fine fertilizer... Once yer makin' a million ofin this Sheri...cut Us in organicgardening.about.com/od/compost/a/LeafMold.htm
