Although I found some organic garlic at HEB I wanted something different . Well Seeds from Italy just recently got their garlic and I found Rossa di Sulmona which is from the Abruzzo region of Italy. Also We Grow Garlic has a few left that might be good too. Any other ideas for other companies to look at?

Some good advice JC. I checked out SSE and Johnny's and they where sold out. Will most likely look up fishers for next year as they seem to have some nice garlic.I am getting two of Seeds from Italy's three varieties one of which I mentioned. For Music I went to my old fall back place Ebay. The seller has a great feed back rating and a nice selection. Also adding Lorz Italian to the mix too. Should be a good mix.

Garlic verities for you in Texas will get different results then I get here in NJ. You may have better luck with the Artichoke and soft neck verities then I do because of the warmer weather there. The hard neck verities usually do much better in the colder weather.

Thanks JC . What I plan to do is try several varieties and see how they do.Hope to have a good harvest but as we know anything can happen. We will have some cool weather months coming up before to long So that should help.
In other news Seeds from Italy sent me an email that they just got some organic garlic in. They are Ajo Rojo ,Chesnock Red and Susanville . Also for you fava bean fans they just got their shipment in from Italy and once it's gone won't be back till next fall. They have four varieties. Also for folks growing greens this fall they have an overstock on some that are worth checking out. The seed count will be generous so they will be well worth the money.

You are definitely doing the right approach with the different verities of garlic to see what works out best. Keep good records of your planting and results. Keep record of weather and moisture also. Bone meal will help if you work it in your beds before planting your garlic. And spraying Fish formula and kelp helps in the spring for the first eight weeks of growth. Try soaking your cloves with kelp for eight hours before planting, follow the directions for the right dilution.

Thanks for the great advice JC. I do intend to post my progress right here. I do use Neptune's Harvest fish/kelp mix. would that do for soaking the cloves? It is really nice to be able to finally get garlic added to the garden ? Also will be working in leaves but was thinking about green sand and peat moss to loosen up the clay soil we have here. Would that work too?

Would that work too? The Neptune's Harvest will work fine for soaking and foliar feeding as well. I would try mixing as much compost as possible and then add some sandy humus. I would be careful using peat in you beds it can bring the PH down, you want your soil at 6.5 but not lower then 5.5. Plant the cloves at 6" spacing rather then 4" It will help to use a sub soiler to loosen the deeper hard pan.
