and I know it's not ALL parents. You may or may not know that I am an RN and before I retired last year I worked as a school nurse. Last month, October, they called and asked if I would fill in for a while in my same schools (2 of them ) that I had left. I said yes. I had forgotten how aggravating it is and why I had taken an early retirement.
Nope. It's not the students. I can deal with sick kids all day long. Vomit, rashes, lice, nits, scabs, blood, snot, poop don't bother me a bit.
It's the slack ass parents.
How can you, as a parent, send your child away from home, to school, to camp, to church, to wherever, and refuse to give a phone number where you can be reached in an emergency. How can you, as a parent, if you are finally found refuse to pick up your sick child. "Oh, I'm at WalMart getting my nails done. I can't come. Just put him on the bus." SORRY DUMB ASS!!! I can NOT put your puking kid on the bus to infect every other kid on that bus. True story. Has happened more than once.
How can you, as a parent, say you can't leave work to come sign a consent for your child to have their broken arm fixed when an ambulance has taken them from their school to the ER. More than once I've had to threaten parents with a DSS investigation to get them to leave their job to come to the ER. I realize that the parents in my school who actually do work may be working for hourly pay but that's the price you pay for having a bunch of kids. If they break their arm you have to rebudget your finances and come take care of them. No. I do not feel sorry for you. This is YOUR child.
How can you, as a parent, tell me NOT to call an ambulance because you can't make it to the ER "can't you just take care of it at school" when you're child fell off the slide and was knocked unconscious.
Both my schools have low socioeconomic students. Mostly hispanic and black students. I don't believe for one second all these kids are poor. I think the hispanics just aren't taxed so we have no idea how munch money they're making but I do know that when we can make one of them come to school they arrive in a car a lot nicer than my Honda, sporting a lot more gold than I have ever owned. And for the black or African American (whatever you want to use) grandparent who shows up, because it's rarely a mother or father, they have their weave on and their acrylic nails polished.
How can you have a child living in your house and not tell them their last name. I can't understand why these kids don't know their last names? Why doesn't your 2nd grader know that you have another name other than "mom". Why doesn't your 1st grader know her colors? Why can't your kids tie their shoes??
And last but not nearly least why, when I know that you are getting $200.00 per month for food for each of your 5 children and for yourself do your children come to school and tell us that they're hungry because they don't get supper. Why does your son lose 8 pounds over fall break? Why does he tell us that he only eats at school. Why did DSS, after I called, remove him from your home because you weren't feeding him. What are you doing with all those food dollars. My tax dollars!!!!
I am an Army brat and lived on Army bases all my life where I never knew that people were supposed to think less of one race or another. Our friends and neighbors were Mexican, black, oriental, whoever was in the Army and placed on our street at that time. So I'm not writing this from a racist point of view. These are the facts that I see every day in my schools.
