Has anyone here grown head lettuce? I've grown it in the past but never had a head form. We always get the most tasty leafs off of it but no head. I was told yesterday that you have to "tie" it up for it to form a head. Any ideas.

I grew some this year for the first time in early spring, late winter that made a head. It was buttercrunch. Once the heat got going down here it bolted. Can't tell u what I did, cause I don't know other than I planted it. Isn't there some lettuces that don't head but only have leaves? Perhaps thats what you had unknowingly. Sorry not much help. trudy

Maybee it just gets too hot fer it where I plant it. I've been told that you can't grow head lettuce in Michigan, the weather isn't right. But who knows. We've got a few types oph leaf lettuce goin' though. I'll try that next year Laura, Thanx.

It's a challenge, but is do-able, the leaf lettuces are so much easier and the variety is better.
