I was in the garden a little while ago, had to unload some palets I had picked up for a future compost bin. I had planted 10 asparagus plants back in the phall, early winter. Now I've got 3 spears. I'm so excited they made it. I don't think all 10 plants made it though, but at least 3 did. lol. I know to you veteran asparagus grower this isn't a big deal, but to a southerner that doesn't grow it, believe me ITS A BIG DEAL. I've never see it grow here in this area. Thats why I was so surprised to see it offered at Walmart in town here. Anything special I need to know from you seasoned grower on this plant. I know I am suppose to NOT pick it for another year, right? trudy

Oh, it is a big deal Trudy, and it will get bigger. Assuming you planted crowns, yes you should wait. It's hard tho huh! I waited 4 years for mine to start going strong, but I planted seed. And for the first three years, it was all I could do not to cut a few..actually, did cut a few...just a taste

Yes they were crowns that I traded for. Then the other day while at Lowe's in Macon (coming back from taking DD to school I stopped by and there they had some Mary Washington. I got 1 pack of 10 there. Then here locally at W-mart they had some Jersey Giants. Macon is almost 3 hrs north east from me, so I'd expect them to have them, but not this far down cause of the heat, but there they were. I bought 2 packs that had 6 in each. So now I have an additional 22 plants to put somewhere. So Phil or whomever. after this year I can start actually using them? They were older crowns from what the trader told me. They had been neglected and he no longer wanted them. Am I understanding it right, 1 year for crowns. 3 yrs for seeds, correct? Trudy

Asparagus!!! The only expirience I have is from "pops" patch. But I think yer pretty close to right. From what I've seen, crowns range from 2-3 yrs. Depends on conditions! Since I've "gained" a few patches myself by movin here, I'm no expert, I'd say give it at least a year!

XDX is correct the general rule is NOT to harvest crown planted asparagus the first year, harvest for no more than 2 weeks the second, then harvest the third year for 3 weeks or more, or until many smaller, more spindly spears start to show, over harvesting will weaken the crowns and lessen the harvest, on the upside, you will be enjoying a well maintained bed for 15-20 years!!
