Being from the South,(Kentucky) I remember my grandparents talking about the signs of winter to come. Sorta like the wooly worms, the squirrels, does anyone else have a way of predicting how bad the winter will be. They are saying here that this is going to be one of the worst. ;D ;D

The higher hornets build their nests from the ground, the worse the winter will be........they built'em high up around here this year

The only wooly worm I have seen so far was confusing--it was black all down the middle and brown on both sides?? Never seen one like that. Any ideas what that means? Not seen any hornets nests.

The old pholks also say.........the more silk on corn, the harder the winter.

The woolly bear caterpillar's stripes are are used to predict the coming winter in these parts as follows:
The longer the brown stripe between the black ones the milder the winter;
A narrow brown stripe foretells a cold, severe winter.
