Jim and I just came home and found HUGE bear tracks in the snow around our house. The bear had knocked down the shepherd's pole that held the bird feeders and opened up our garbage. I THOUGHT BEARS HIBERNATED DURING THE WINTER!!!!!! Photos: Shows the claw marks well: Shows the pads of the foot well: For comparison, Jim put his foot, size 10 1/2, next to one of the tracks:

Whats has your weather been like? Yeah I see the snow. But if theres a warm snap or unusually long cold one even, bears will come out of hibernation for a snack. Usually not far from their dens though. Do you have grizzlies out there?? I'm in black bear country and (knock on wood) haven't had yogi visit in the winter. Here is a wonderful, and very informative site. Check it out: www.bear.org

Geeeez,,, I'm so thankful i live on an island, an were a little to south for polar bears to wander down here. The mainland has lots of brown bear, but like i said, thank goodness for islands....lol.

My neighbor says she's seen bear in our area in the past. We have black bears here. One of my friends saw the photo and said it looks to be about 600 lb. The wildlife officer that comes by our art gallery saw the picture and said that her guess on the weight is probably pretty close. He said that the males don't hibernate here, because the food is so available and the winters don't get too cold. The females, though, do "den up" because they're pregnant, so our bear is most likely a male. He said to make noise whenever I'm walking in the woods. Black bears will avoid you if they know you're there. The only time there are attacks are if someone surprises them and they have no way to retreat. Also, he recommends carrying pepper spray when I go out wandering.

Use a bell too. Put it on your belt, ankle or wrist, anywhere it jingles while ya walk. Instant noise without talking to yourself.

I thought we're only supposed to "bell the cat", not ourselves, hahahahhaha... Of course, wearing a bell instead of talking to myself would make the neighbors stop thinking I'm nuts (but where's the fun in that!).

Everytime I go outside now, and I hear a sound behind me, my heart jumps in my throat. Darn birds scratch the ground on purpose now to make me nervous, I think.

I would be going in the opposite direction of that bear. I don't think I would be sneaking up on him to take pics.... I'd be very nervous going outside now, too!

I hate going out to get the mail at night when I get home. Last night, our dog started barking and my husband almost flew off the couch to see what she was yapping at...it was just a cat, ha ha.
