Asyou know- we have 6 RIR babies that are about 3 months old. Last night(early evening) my daughter went to check on them(one of her chores) and came running back in saying that one of them was limping. Sure enough- one is favoring it's left leg. What do we do now?? We can't see any damage or deformity, but my hubby said that if it isn't better in a day or two- we may have to put it down. I really hate to do that....any suggestions would be great! The injured one is the one we nicknamed "Sleepy" because she falls asleep all the time. This morning she was staying pretty much to herself, which is not all that uinusual, but worrisome just the same......HELP!!!

Generally, there is not much you can do. I would just watch her, sometimes they will heal the injury on their own, other times, it will get worse. She may just walk with a limp all her life. It makes you wonder how the injury occured doesn't it?

There could be several causes such as a bad landing off a high roost or something like bumblefoot. Check the bottom of her foot in the pad area for excessive heat and try to feel the leg for any breaks. Usually they will be fine in a week or so but just keep a close watch on her, and tell hubby to put the hatchet away, chickens are some tough critters.

Thanks NN- I think I have him convinced that she will make it and be fine(even if she keeps the limp) I have checked her for breaks, but never thought of checking for heat. If it was broken, wouldn't she "cry?" when I touched/moved it?? She doesn't make a sound, just falls asleep like she always has. Thanks for all the imput you all- I really appreciate it!!

Hows' the chick now? Sorry I didn't offer any help to ya. my laptop crashed a few days ago, and I was going nuts not being able to be on the net. Ken came home from work this morning and brought me a new laptop! So I'm happy again! We had a rooster that walked funny , but we didn't put him down..he could still do his "duty" , eat, and drink. Anyway looks like others helped you out fast, and good advice too!

One morning we went out to check birds and a hen looked real strange and after getting close it was discovered that sometime through the night a varmit had grabbed her and tried to pull her through the fence. The skin on her neck was torn at the base and rolled up around the base of her head. Since it was late winter and no bugs were out we decided to trim the skin off and just watch her close. Her skin grew back with not so much as a scar, just two little knots on the back of her head that looked like horns.
