I'm with you J'nette. I think she's pretty too. Hey, caveman, will she give me eggs? She does look a little mean in the eyes, with a very threatening looking beak too. She got a couple of strong pecks in on my dog's nose this morning... He took it like a good dog tho!!! I'm keeping her in that cage for now, since I don't have a chicken coop. I guess that'll keep her from being fox bait...

Well DAP she is a beauty! And definitely game. I have a hen, Ember, she is half game half Rhode Island Red, and she is one of the smaller bodied hens I have. She doesn't put up with any nonsense from the roos or the other hens, she will get after them in a minute, and they will run from her, half their size but three times as mean..he he..seems games aren't scared of anything. She is really pretty.

Question...should I let her out of the cage even tho I don't have a chicken coop? I take her out in the yard now within the cage, but put her in the goat shed at night to keep her out of the weather. Would she go back in the cage by herself at night if I leave her food and water in there? Oh, and what about eggs? How do I encourage her to lay 'em where I can find them if I let her loose?

DAP I would build her a pen. The odds are against her being the only chicken. You know the saying, everything loves chicken. I have 5 pens I keep for breeding pairs and overzealous roosters. I have access to free 2 by 4s, as many as you need. I build them out of these, and make a door, and staple chicken wire on. I have pictures somewhere in my computer of them. Its easy really. To encourage her to lay, I would use one of those (and do use) plastic stackable crates you can get at the Dollar General for a couple of bucks. Fill it with hay, stick it in the pen and she will fix it to her liking. Get her a bag of layer feed. Corn is alright as a treat, but has no real nutritional value. I use it in the winter because it generates more body heat in the chickens to keep warm. Don't forget the roost in the pen! She will be safer in a pen, and she looks to be a light weight, so I am betting she would fly right over a fence. Well, there is my 2 cents. Hope this helped some!

That's what I was thinking. But do you have a roof or chicken wire over the pen? When my mom had chickens when I was a kid she had a solid walled and roofed coop, but we were in WI then and it got pretty COLD in the wintertime! And THAT is an understatement!!! Don't I need to protect her from rain and stuff? I mean, we can get some heavy, horizontal rains in these parts! I hope you can find your pix, I'd love to see your set up. Oh, heck, I just need to plan a trip over to see you!!! Are you free Monday?

She is a purtty lil thing..now you need to get her some company.. A rooster & you can listen to him at all hours like we do here.. He statrts crowing when he sees light in the house..daffy bird..they have the freedom to go outside..& back inside at night..they are tough chickens..like the cold..they can only go out in the tractor we built for them.

Yes, she will give you eggs, when her cycle starts.........with or without the rooster..........she will be happier with more space and freedom. I don't think she will go back in that cage.......she will look for a tree to roost in without havein a chicken house. Games are great birds........they can and will live on their own, with no help from man. Make her a house.........put in a roost pole(round wood) at least 4 feet from the ground..........after dark take her from the cage and set her on that roost pole..........she should go back to it the next night.......if not....repeat the after dark move. Hope this helps.

Thanks caveman. Once she has the house, she will not necessarily lay her eggs in there though, will she?

Put a nest box in her house.........milk crates work well(don't forget straw or hay). Games can be strange birds............she may lay in her house and she may not.........if she is inside of a pen she should use the nest box. I have a rooster i would give you if we were closer to each other.

sure 'nuff did! Had me a fried egg fer breakfast yesterday and then she laid another one 'bout noon today, so hubby and I shared a fried egg sandwich fer lunch today!!! Yep, I am definitely gonna get me a couple more chickens! We almost finished her chicken coop today; I'm still dragging her in and out of the shed in that wire crate, but she doesn't seem to mind. I'll be glad when the coop is done tho. Slowly but surely, we are turnin' this place into a bona phide pharm here!

I am lovin' bein' in da chicken coop! She is such a sweet chicken. The other day she pushed her egg right out of the nest (she makes herself a nest in the hay inside her crate) toward me when I did my chores in the morning! It was so cool!!! Like, "Here it is! I've been saving it just for you!!"
