Illinois vehicles to rely on alternative fuels
By Mitzie Stelte sng3@springnet1.com 217-525-8207
SPRINGFIELD -- New state-owned vehicles will be able to be run on fuel derived from Illinois crops. Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed a bill Friday requiring state agencies to purchase flexible fuel vehicles, which can run on E-85, an 85 percent blend of ethanol and gasoline, and diesel-powered vehicles that run on B-5, a blend of 5 percent bio-diesel and regular diesel, which burn cleaner than regular fuel. Chief sponsor of the legislation, Rep. Mike Boland, D-East Moline, said the law is not only going to create cleaner air, but will make a bigger market for Illinois corn and soybeans. Farmers will have more money to spend in their communities and new markets will lead to the building of more ethanol and biodiesel plants, which would create hundreds of construction jobs as well as permanent ones, he said. The bill also encourages state agencies to purchase fuel-efficient hybrids, which use an average of 45 percent less fuel than traditional engines. Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn worked with Boland on this legislation. Boland said these vehicles use less gasoline and the fuel costs less per gallon. "This will also be a benefit to national security," Boland said. "The more we can become less dependent on the volatile Middle East, and more on our neighbors in the Middle West, the better off we'll be."

Simuliar ideas were kicked around in the late 70's and mid 80's in several states. I think this time states will actually DO something this go around !!!! I hope so......

Being in the feed industry for over 20 years I’m going to give you a prediction on corn prices for the 2007 crop. $4.80 - $5.20 Time will tell but I bet I'm gonna be real close. Well I believe that with the upcoming of Ethanol plants they are already getting the jitters. Corn here is at $3.97 a bushel!!!! That's the highest price I've ever seen.

I don't doubt that at all CFF. I've heard of possible contracts at $7 or more!!!! It'll sure help alot of farmers. But if I'm not mistaken they want a higher oil corn for this purpose.

The oil companies already have several millions of gallons per year stills in operation. They already have driven several smaller independant ethanol plants out of business . And are trying to do the same or buy out others. They will not give up their control over us easily...

Jeantte, I agree with you 100%. I feel the farmer should 50% of the selling price in the grocery store. If it were not for the farmer, we would not have the produce that we have today. The middle man does not need to get the 80% + selling price.

While on my way to DD's school I noticed a gas station selling Bio Diesel, I ment to check out the price but forgot to when I was leaving that area of town. But it surprised me a little cuz usually that is made at home around here or municipalities make it to use, but not for the public. trudy

well it seems that the poorer folks in mexico are feeling the pinch of higher corn prices... let me ask you this: do you think we should get less for our corn so those folks can have cheaper food? .. did they care that farmers were and are still going bankrup, having to sell land that has been in their family for generations because of low corn prices?

No. the American farmer should not. I still say that the farmer should get at leat 50% of the store selling price. If it were not for the farmer, there would not be a middle man. I would like to see the farmer selling direct to the consumer with out the middle man.

And just to add to that-is it the American pharmers' phault that our large corporations are moving their plants to these south of the border plants because the ppl there are willing to work for peanuts? It isn't just the pharmers hurt in this equation!!! It all boils down to the big corporation and their greed for the $$$.

Our school buses have been using alternate fuel energy to run buses, seems to be working, and no....I don't think our country should lower corn prices for Mexico, same prices for all, they have overrun this country, with drugs, illegals, quite frankly, I am sick to death of our gov. not deporting these folks, as of 1/23, all americans required to have passports traveling to Mexico , Canada and other parts of the world, if we do it, then they can stay in their homeland too. Our state budgets have been pushed to their limits with taking care of illegals.....MHO.
