This is a unique technique for WinXP.
We know that it is necessary to scrub registry and TEMP files periodically. Prefetch is a new and very useful technique in Windows XP. However, after using XP some time, the prefetch directory can get full of junk and obsolete links in the Prefetch catalog, which can slow down your computer noticeably.
Open C (system drive)
Open Windows
Open Prefetch
Delete those junk and obsolete files.
Reboot.
It is recommended that you do this every month.

I'm gonna go try it on my main desk top...it won't kill a system that's been running three or four years without ever running it before, will it x?

Next question, before I actually perform this task~do I just do a Ctl-A, then delete the contents of the whole folder, or do I select certain ones and if so, how do I know which ones to get rid of and which to keep?

DAP it will not hurt a thing. As far as selecting files,...Ctl-A. Take em all out! In a week I have 2-3 MB in my prefetch, clearin it makes a HUGE difference!

I just did it on my PC. Couldn't believe all the 'junk' it contained.
nnbreader: Do a "Ctrl A" ( select all), press the 'delete' key. It will move all the files to the recycle bin, Then you can delete all the contents by pressing the 'empty the recycle bin. You should be good to go 'till next month.
Thanks XDX for the great info.
