Chickenfarmer,
How large is your yard if it takes over 4 gallons of gasoline to mow it?

Well Hillside , the front yard is an acre, the back yard is over two acres, then we have a 2500 foot walking path that loops the back end of the property. All together we cut close to 4 acres. Today the cheapest gas was found 15 miles away at 2.89... but the closer stations out by the lake are still at 3.09 oh yeah with cutting the grass, then running around with the cart picking up all the debris, it takes a lil over 4 gallons to cut the yard... Sometimes 5.

Its time to be reminded of a dephinition, the word is 'hobo'. I guess, most contemporary people have heard the word, but do you know what it means. OK, after the Stock Market Crash of 1929 many people were out of work although quite a few still had their nice houses and lawns. A 'hoe' could be had relatively cheaply by those who were out of work, if nothing else an out of work person could make a hoe or steal a hoe. So, those who went by the term 'hobo', got themselves a hoe and set out to see if by offering a service with said hoe, they might get a meal or a few cents. Do not be mislead, the hoeing was not of gardens but rather of lawns, it being during the pre-power lawn mower era, thats how it was done, just basically whack down the weeds in a limited space right around the house, look at your old family photographs of their homeplaces, its plain as day. But, now in this world of scarcity, there are those who think they deserve a 4+ acre yard and b**ch because someone will not provide them with cheap fuel, hardly organic. Thruout most of history and most of the world currently houses are surrounded by bare, eroded (from the action of cropping domestic animals) ground, yet we can surround ourselves with acres of wasted land, water, fuel, chemicals, machinery, etc. The best one is the folks who rake or vacuum their lawns clean of leaves and lawn clippings but then add fertilizer so the grass will grow so they can cut it!!!! My 90 year old father-in-law is the same way, wonders why I don't install wood heat in mine and Brenda's houseand save that 150 gallons of fuel oil each winter, yet he bush-hogs about 5 acres of yard 10 to 15 times a year with a $20,000 diesel tractor and uses 3,000 pounds of chemical fertilizer on his garden and plows the dickens out of his garden, over and over and over, which is comparable in size and production to mine where no chemical fertilizer or plows are used. But, I can excuse his way of thinking due to his age. In the words of Earl Pitts-American, "Wake up Amurika!"

One thing I have noticed is that people gripe about the price of gas but will they slow down to keep from using as much? No. The wife and I both drive older, smaller trucks and keep the speed down to save a little fuel. Mow grass? Not with 6 horses we don't and they leave a nice level cut then the chickens come in and spread out the fertiliser they leave while we sit and watch! Can't have flowers with this method but oh well! Oh btw gas is 2.79 here in central Ok.
