I mentioned that I recently started a new job. I am the fill in person in an Occupational Health office, meaning, I was hired to fill in when one or the other (there are only two) nurses take time off. Well, the nurse that used to work there quit right about the time I started. She was there just long enough to show me the ropes and then she was going to move back to NC. Another nurse was hired to replace her in a full time position. Turns out, she didn't move back to NC after all. Now, my superviser absolutely loved her (the one who quit). When the superviser found out that she was still in the area, superviser went to her manager and talked him into allowing her to put NC girl back on staff so that she could fill in when I could not. Well, this morning I got a phone call from the nurse that quit, asking me to join her for lunch today. So I did...turns out she was working today, the superviser had a funeral to go to, and called her last week to ask her to work. Needless to say, I did not get that call. I was bypassed. Now I am wondering what to do. This totally falls on the superviser~but, do I approach the problem? I mean this is totally unethical...do I even bother to address the problem, or go find another place to work? My co-worker, the one that picked up today's shift said she will make sure that the superviser goes thru the proper channels in the future before she will agree to picking up a shift, but I know I can't rely on that. I don't know, all I know is that I am so disappointed right now, and so mad and feeling like there is not one thing I can do about it. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!

Gosh DAP, thats a tuff one. I'd be lookin for other employment myself. If you have a supervisor who plays favorites then you may not get the work time you need. But then again any work is better than no work.

Its easy for me to say look for other employment, but only u can make that decision. I don't know your chain of command or the people involved. But I would like to think that by talking to the supervisor in charge would alleviate the problem, or all involved can come up with a compromise. If not I'm sure there are channels you can take to correct this where everyone is satisfied. You may even have to file a grievance with the company, not sure if this would do any good with you being a fill in and not a full time employee or not. We hire a lot of temporary's where I work and we can let them go at anytime for no reason, but on the same token they can leave anytime without notice or reason. I don't see you being satisfied with the situation like it is otherwise you wouldn't be thinking of other employment. I think you should at least try and get satisfaction that way at least you've tried. If you can't get any results you can leave with a clear conscience (sp) that u gave it your best effort. There again its easy for me to say all this not being in your shoes. Best of luck, trudy

1st talk to the supervisor that gave away the shift. If not satisfied, then follow chain of command etc.
Yes this was wrong, if you were hired to do the fill ins, they definatley went around you...
This is a blatent case of nepotism........ When the other girl quit, she should of lost all senority, and you should of been called first.
Jobs are so hard to get lately, but if you must move on do it. Other resources are labor board negotiators... But that is time consuming.

That is what my sis does. She is part time but sometimes she works a lot. She picks up all the days the other nurses are off. She says there are pros and cons to being part time. She had a problem once and got no where and went to another hospital.
She fretted about it for a while, ( as we all do when we are wronged ) But the problem did not get resolved so she left.
As everyone has said do what gives you peace of mind.

I have not left yet, just because I am back in college now and I really am not motivated to try and find a different job. I only work occasionally here, which works out well for school. So, I plan to stay put til after the holidays, and then maybe I will try to find something. Actually, I am kinda thinking I may have to look a little sooner, 'cuz she wants to take off a couple of days before Thanksgiving and I sent her an email tonight that we will be out of town that week. I anticipate that may precipitate my dismissal...

Not necessarily. This is an industrial plant that I work in, and the plant shuts down over the holidays. I think they are closed for at least a week over the Christmas holiday. And closed Thursday and Fri for Thanksgiving. However, the superviser is planning to be off Tues and Wed before Thanksgiving. And that is why I am anticipating a potential problem... Time will tell!

Dap, I'm sure of your abilities, another job wouldn't be hard to find. I dont take people walkin over me too lightly, I'm sorta getting the same deal at my job. I'm giving it some time to see what happens and then I'll be job searching. I dont think I'll have a problem finding one. I have had a really good offer $6 more on da hour and full benefits but it would require me driving more. I'm waiting it out until I see what happens. I dont have a problem telling people to shove it! I have no use for employers dat lie! I got so bad at work the other day I walked out and told my boss why. I told him I needed a few minutes to calm down before I had another stroke!

as the saying goes: you were looking for a job when you walked in there, be pretty easy to do it again... people always hire you if you have a job already
