Ok, I don't own animals, and don't live on a farm. However, I would like to some day. Might be a long time if ever, but my dream is to do a little homesteading with maybe chickens and/or rabbits down the road (years, maybe). Might not be for a long time, though. Anyway, I'm hearing a lot of alarming things about the National Animal Identification System. What are your thoughts on this? Something to be worried about? I hope this question isn't too "political" for this board. If it's too hot, then just say so and I won't be offended if Phil wants to remove the post. I'm just concerned as to whether homesteading will be effectively outlawed by the time I get around to being able to do it. And even if it didn't directly affect my plans, it is still alarming nonetheless because of the adverse effects it could have on small farming, the nation's food supplies, driving up costs, destruction of biological diversity, etc. I've read some scary things at: www.nonais.orgWhat are ya'll's take on it?

It was really sounding scary here in TX, but folks put up such a fuss, it has quieted down some. I was afraid I was going to have to buy camoflauge aprons for all the chickens. It would mean extra money to have to pay as you would have to register your place, then the critters from the way we were told. Many said they would sell off everything, and we have downsized some.I am too much of a rebel,I am always in trouble with city hall as it is.I am afraid that the cow in Alabama that was on the news tonight with positive mad cow disease will just start it all up again. Hope I am wrong, but I am beginning to feel we no longer live free, someone is always making up rules. They don't know anything about my critters, they just sit in an office and figure how much more they can make people pay. Better get off my soap box !

I don't like it one bit. It is a huge invasion of privacy, as far as I'm concerned. Supposedly, it has been implemented here in NY. Though I have seen no signs of it. The feed store had order forms for poultry chicks. There was no mention of NAIS on them.

I think its a stupid idea, especially for the farmers who have a lot of animals. It would be constant paperwork, the government is in our private lives enough as it is and always has their hand out for more money. They need to get a life of their own. Its easy for someone to sit in an office and dream up stuff for other folks, but to actually have this implemented is insane. trudy

The option to microchip pets has been around for quite a while now. Most people do not have their dogs microchipped. I have noticed some shelters doing it now when the dogs are put up for adoption.

We have our dog microchipped, but it is because he is a search and rescue dog, and we would want to try to find him if we ever lost him. He is a very smart German Shepherd. I can't see microchips in cows, etc. I heard them discussing it on the radio and the type they would use for the cow's ear could get hung up on the mesquites. I am still unsure of what all this is going to entail. Seems they are trying to shove it down our throats. I can't keep my goats from getting their heads stuck in a fence, I don't need another problem to contend with by having some kind of loop around their ears.

They just want to know whats in our back yard with out having to go themselves. Hoping that we will bend over and just do it. That way when the day comes that their animals are all sick and our's are ok- they will take it and say it for everybody not just for you. Yes, i read there bull and not very happy about it at all. We are thinking of raising our own calf & goats naturlly, but if that rule gose in we would have to shoot them up with shots and crap. Its not right. I'm sorry if it sounds bad, I needed to vent a little..Adelita of Texas

Good news about NAIS in Tennessee! They just passed a law that prohibits any funds going towards a National ID for livestock. So, now, if everyone else will stand up ad be heard, maybe we can all beat this insane gubbermint idea!

Does anyone else get countryside? There are some interesting responses to the last issues story on it. One reply by "Glenn Slack NIAA CEO" . Interesting reading I guess, just govt. rederick. I wish it were that easy. A 300 head herd of brood cows and 1600 acres of crop and hay are very hard to relocate. Much less afford.

Here's an interesting fact, You DON'T have to comply with this. Acording to an artical I read in "CountrySide" magazine, the NAIS is only a draft proposal. It has not been voted on by congress or the house of representitives. Keeping it a draft, they can change, add ,or delete any of the "rules". As soon as the artical is on the site I'll post a link.

Very true the plan doesn't become mandatory until '09. Texas had to back down some, they were going to fine $1000.00 per animal unit per day for not registering. That plan has been put on hold until '07. they even require cage birds such as parrots to be registered. You can find a copy of the draft proposal and the implimintation schedule at the USDA website. Once there put NAIS into the search box and settle back for an evening of reading, the last time I read through it the draft proposal was 47 pgs.

Hey done here down under we already have that sort of thing in place for cattle. You are forbidden to sell or even give away any cattle without it having a ID tag. Here they used the threat of the disease TB to get the powers through.
Can you people still kill your own livestock for your own food consumption? Apparantly the Poms can't.

Yes Jack, we can still process our own animals for ourselves here. But most folk don't know how. The TB and Mad cow disease are the way the powers that be are pushing it through. As of March 1st 2007, all livestock in Michigan must be tagged/chiped. That includes pet potbellied pigs, goats or any other livestock.
