After a slow start, the winter wood cutting has been going well lately. The morning low temps have been below zero, but the days have been sunny and by afternoon it has been up into the teens. This is not bad weather for working in the woods if you dress properly, keep moving, and don't stay out too long. I don't have any big blow downs to deal with this year so I am concentrating on fairly large trees that are past their prime. I am trying to put as much as possible into long lengths because I will have plenty of time to block and split them when break-up comes and the trail goes to hell. Spring is a nice time to cut wood, before it gets too warm and the bugs aren't bad yet, but by then the trails will be soft until mid-summer. I spent the better part of last summer in the woods. It wasn't too bad because we had a cool summer last year, but of course you can't count on that happening again. I would much rather do this work in the winter and spring anyway,so that I can spend the summer on other projects and fishing.
