www.wkyt.com/home/headlines/39519127.htmlKentucky Governor Steve Beshear signed a bill Friday afternoon that imposes higher taxes on cigarettes and alcohol sold in the state. The Senate narrowly passed the measure Friday morning by a vote of 24-12. The measure increases the tax on cigarettes from 30 cents to 60 cents a pack, generating about $81.5 million a year, and imposes a 6 percent retail sales tax on all alcohol products, generating an additional $97.9 million a year. The plan also transfers $219 million from the state's rainy day fund to the general fund. Kentucky is facing a $456.1 million shortfall in the fiscal year ending June 30. Lawmakers say raising the taxes combined with shifting other state money should offset the need for deeper cuts in government spending. The new taxes will go into effect on April 1st. This sucks....cause i smoke and drink

Think about it this way, maybe it's really a bill to increase employment. (stay with me here) First the tax on liquor and tobacco goes up, then people get back into more boot-legging so tax collection actually goes down. Then the revenue dept has to hire extra folks to track down the illegal operations, plus they take all yer stuff and sell it for "ill-gotten gains" or whatever they call it.

Maybe now is the time to start using "The family Cloth" way cheaper than store bought TP! I don't smoke or really drink,(maybe a beer once in awhile) But I heard Obama was raising taxes on cigarettes to cover the national heath care for every child in the USA. So you maybe paying even more in Taxes there cavey!

Michigan has one of the highest cigarette taxes in the country, but the last time they raised it their revenues actually declined. Some people quit smoking, others bought from out of state, and others started making their own. So now they want to put the same tax on cigars, chewing tobacco, and loose cigarette and pipe tobacco. I read somewhere once that "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result each time."
