Okay, Fess up, who planted potatoes today ? This is the day you know ! DH planted potatoes today. I asked him how many he planted, he laughed and said he didn't know, a friend gave him a couple seed potatoes, so he cut out the eyes and planted them in an old tire. Guess he will plant more later, just had to get some planted today !

Hoping for tomorrow (for the remaining ones in the bag, now with 5" sprouts) as it is supposed to be warm again with rain Fri. PM. (Today I uncovered all the frostnetted beds and weeded, weeded, weeded. Happy to see little pollenating bugs (1/4" black wasps?) going to all the yellow blossoms on chard and Asian greens....maybe I will get some seeds to save!)

I heard this yesterday, there is a gardener round here that lets his seed potatoes sprout eyes, breaks them off and plants the whole spud. They say he always has a huge crop. Has anyone ever heard this before?

Maybe I should try me some tators this year... What is it that you want to put a layer of in the bottom of the trench?? I saw Martha Stewart talk about it years ago... Something from her yard... pine needles maybe?

I just lay mine on the ground and throw a bunch of leaves on top of them. Usually works just fine. I throw compost on them when I think about it.

Well I'll let ya know. As far as I've learned, you first cut the potatoe in half, not the long way. Then you put it in water, kinda held in suspention with tooth picks or something to keep the spud from touching the bottom. Then in a couple oph weeks youll see the eyes sprout. Then break the sprouts off carefully, and start them inside, in a organic starter mix. When they begin to show growth you can replant them out of doors. This could be not entirely correct, thats why I was askin. Got a few in water(willow water) as we speak.

Around here you can buy slips from the feed store, and from what the old timers tell me thats the best way to go. You have to start with SP "slips". Let us know how your experiment works. T

yep glass of water does really well. I don't even cut mine. Just plop the tater in and let the shoots just grow.
When they are about 4-6 inches long I stick in a glass and let them root. When they have roots several inches long then I plant them. Not much of an experiment so much as a darn easy way to grow them.
When you plant outside keep the vine trimmed to about 12 inches . This will force the growth to bigger and more potatoes. They love rich friable soil with good drainage.
leave them alone and they will zoom along. The leaves are yummy sauted in butter with other veggies.

plant you sweet potatoes running up a trellis. They don't take alot of room except for the vines. The soil has to be very warm for sweet potatoes and they require a long season 120 days. Get them up and out of the way and both can grow fairly close to each other. bon apetit

The taters are growing, the taters are growing, looking good !!!! We start our own Sweet Potaoto slips as well, just stick the tater in a camnning jar. pull off the slips as they grow up there pretty quick ( or make a pretty plant as well).

I was suspost to plant taters on the 18th of March!?? We still had 2 ft. of snow on the ground! I wouldn't of even been able to find my gardens! Ok all joking aside. I am going to plant taters this year. I heard you can plant taters in old straw from the barn. So when we get the barn cleaned out for the first time, I plan on using that straw. Hope dem taters grow!
