Yesterday, which was what, Oct 17th?...I was thinking about how this year has really flown by, for me anyways. I know I started a pepper plant in the house in the fall sometime, just to have something alive to keep foolin' with. My poor memory tells me it was around the end of Sept. I will get my ducks in a row this year and plant my piquin seeds on Nov 1st if as they say, the Lord's willin' and the creek don't rise. This will give me something to do since I have so little to do here lately. Got to clean off my shelf under the CFLs. Somehow kitchen stuff creeps in and now it full of jars and stuff. I did order and receive the correct seed- NuMex Bailey's Chile Piquin. I like them because they drop off the plant when fully red-ripe. Of course the birds like them too, lol. Last year somehow I mixed up seeds and ended up with a nice tiny hot chile that wouldn't let go of the stem. Pictures will follow.

They almost never make it to maturity...now, Remembering...to start them in November...will be the challenge for me...

Phil, you might could wait a little later. If I remember right I had to cut mine back a couple times. I tried to keep it around 6 inches during winter. I will look for my posts from last year.

Mo, that could work though...least to get one ahead of the others... I know there are some things getting started earlier this year. most likely onion seed...they coulda been bigger this spring...but we still got excellent onion harvest of nice big onions...just kinda freaky sitting the plants out when they are thin lil thangs... I THINK WE HAVE AN INTRUDER>>> WHO DOES THAT MO?? someone must travel FROM HERE....to Your Place and FILL up the empty spaces as soon as they go empty Know what Ya mean My Phriend...Ya carry it out.. Time to Come back in... Hours worth of work...just to get it back where it belongs... THANK GOODNESS YA SAID THIS MO...I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME so how many of them cfl thingys does it take to keep a plant alive...we can't figure in much light from the windows here

I use one of the 100 watt equivalent, uses 26 W I think. I put the plants right under it when they sprout, between an inch and 2 inches away. It works as long as I only have a pot or two, then I go with 2 of the bulbs on adjustable drop cords. I know, it's not supposed to be enough light but I just want to keep them alive, not blooming. If I remember right tho, they bloomed last year under that little bit o' light.

Couldn't find old enough posts but this pic says "Dec blooms" or something like that. So this is what they were doing in Dec after being planted in Sept.

I just hope I don't forget, you still have to harden off a pepper plant even if it's 5-6 months old when you set it out. Last spring I sunburned a few leaves, oops.

Wrennie~ Can you just make a cutting of your favorite and bring that in? I like having that little bit of a garden all year. Then when warm spring days come, I can let it sit out for a couple hours a few days, then put it a big container after last frost and get blooms and peppers going right away. Good luck whatever you decide to do. ;D

Hospice nurse day was yesterday. Due to some downturns in my physical condition I have decided NOT to wait for Nov 1 to start my chile plants. I will start today. Here's a pic of the first, therefore most important steps in growing my favorite chile piquins... First, empty a yogurt cup, then cut some notches in the bottom edge for good drainage.

Wow Starting pepper plants now? You rock!! Who'd of thunk it? I just recently learned your supposed to keep those lights close. I always kept them higher up and everything always got stringy.... Thats about the same time I learned winter sowing. Altho I don't think you can winter sow peppers

I think you might lose some of your seeds to freezing if you winter-sowed pepper seeds outside. That's just my guess tho, never tried it. This is the seeds I will plant, hopefully tomorrow. Starting to rain here now, thru tomorrow morning they say.

Well it quit raining long enough for me to grab a little potting soil from a bag I had but didn't open all summer.

Planted 3 seeds, I'll thin out the weakest one later. Covered them, watered and put the whole thing in a bag. Now they're on the heat pad. No idea what temp, whatever "low" is, lol. Always works for me and cost $1 at a yard sale several years ago....

I had put some seeds in a damp paper towel a few days ago, well today I have a sprout so maybe the ones in the pot will sprout and be pushing up a knuckle soon. I was about to give up on them, lol. ;D

Checked them again earlier today and have 5 sprouted seeds in the paper towel. I moved them into a small pot to grow a while. They're covered with a little starting mix so it's back on the heat pad. I guess I better get the light set up and ready.

If I started tomatoes now they'd get huge by April. I just like to have a pepper plant that's already got roots and a bushy top, ready to start blooming and giving peppers when spring rolls around. Pruning doesn't seem to hurt the peppers much, I'd hate to make that many wounds on a tomato plant.

SO........I took a picture this morning of the knuckles just coming up and turning green on the pepper plants. Of course Photobucket is doing a Beta of a new page that has few features and no explanation, so you'll have to take my word fer it. Tried twice to load the picture, don't know where it went or even IF it's there. Maybe the site will work better tomorrow, or maybe someone will recommend a better photo storage place and I'll switch.

On your home page., or at least on mine, in the top right corner there was a "line of text"that read : Switch back to the old photobucketwhich I did ...couldn't figure it either bro
