The culture is here and ready to be transferd to the petri dishes. So today begins the next adventure in mushroom cultivation. Reports to follow as they happen.

I am going to buy a kit this fall when I get some of the stuff caught up. and my health issues more in balance.
I am really exicted about the muchrooom experiment. Buying a sarter kit sounds right up my alley.

Here are the plates I inoculated. They are colonizing well. It's a slow paced thing to do. The white is the mycilium colonizing the Agar. Some plates are different colors because of the additives not mixed up, some settled to the bottom of the mixing vessel.

Next step will be to transfer the colony into jars with a wood pellet substrate to start the spawn. Then they will be ready for a bulk substrait. Oh yeah pics as it develops This will take a while thou.

To all of you who thought about growing a "kit" or block, here's one we're growing. It's called Hericium erinaceus or Lions Mane. It's supposed to taste like lobster after being saute'd in butter. These will grow fruits as big as baseballs!

I tried growing button mushrooms a couple of years ago & I failed miserably...I would love to know how to do it right. My family are a bunch of mushroom freaks...they just can't get enough of them. It sure would be nice if I could grow my own. As it is right now we do a lot of mushroom hunting at the State Park when in season. I think the ones we hunt for are morels <--not sure how to spell that...but I don't care for them much. I like shitake, button, and portabellos. I am curious to see how your venture with mushrooming goes:)

Well the next step in growing the shrooms has hit a set back. Yesterday I found the dreaded blue/green mold in all 5 jars So today I have to start step 2 over again. I'm not to sure how all 5 jars got contaminated but....they did. Oh well live and learn I guess.

Made and inoculated 6 more jars of spawn and made a new batch of agar. This time I used petri dishes and test tubes, tryin the tubes to see how they work out. Less surface area for contamination. Still got to inoculate the agar this evenin'.

Sum where I'm sure. I grew these from a kit, I'm hopeing to get some spores from them and then grow them as well as the Shiitake I'm tryin' to get going. Two of those were one that I had to cut in half to get it off of the wire shelf they are growing on. After further research they grow in northern lattitudes on Oaks and Maples. I've never seen 'em on any of my excursions through the woods tough.
